She was an employee of an Area Health Authority, a body established by the UK government under the National Health Service Act 1977, as amended by the Health Services Act 1980. She was dismissed after 14 years as she had passed the age of 60. The AHA’s policy was to make women compulsorily retire at 60, but men not till 65.
